President Biden Withdraws From Race, Endorses VP Harris

US  President Joe Biden has announced his decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race, endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee.

President Biden made the announcement in a statement via his official X page on Jul 21, a move that many have said will go into books of history.

“My fellow Democrats, I have decided not to accept the nomination and to focus all my energies on my duties as President for the remainder of my term,” stated President Biden in a tweet to the American people.

“My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. And it’s been the best decision I’ve made. Today, I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year. Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this.”

President Biden’s decision comes amidst intense pressure on him after a tumultuous first debate performance and questions about his ability to defeat former President Donald Trump in the upcoming election. Even though he initially intended to seek re-election, President Biden reaffirmed that stepping down was in the best interest of the people of America and the Democratic Party.

The announcement has elicited swift and varied reactions across the US political landscape, with critics and supporters acknowledging its gravity and the historical meaning of putting the nation’s interests first.

“What you have done today will go down in history as Washingtonian in historical magnitude,” remarked one commentator. “To put the interests of the country ahead of all else, to truly listen to the majority of citizens, thank you.”

Another commenter also openly expressed heartfelt gratitude to the president, saying, “Thank you, President Biden! You had an amazing four years and I’m so grateful for all you have done for this country!”

Throughout his tenure, President Biden has implemented many reforms and initiatives aimed at ensuring unity and stability of the nation. His decision to endorse Harris has been termed strategic as it seeks to ensure the continuity and strength of the Democratic Party ahead of the elections.

For her part, Vice President Harris, in response to President Biden’s endorsement, said she will put all efforts to win in the party’s nomination.

Democratic leaders, such as such as former President Bill Clinton, Senator Elizabeth Warren, and California Governor Gavin Newsom, have shown their determination to rally behind Harris in her bid.

The Democratic National Convention, scheduled to convene in Chicago, will officially formalize Harris’s nomination. However, the convention will be preceded by a virtual roll call vote ton August 1st to strengthen the bid.

Former President Barack Obama and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi have also congratulated President Biden’s for making such a decision, but refrained from declaring their endorsements of Harris or any other candidate. Their measured responses underscore the deliberative process within the party as it prepares to select its nominee.

Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump has already made the move to shape his campaign strategy, calling on Fox News to host the presidential debate rather than ABC News, which was originally okayed to do so in September.

With Vice President Harris prepares to lead the charge, the Democrats are now tasked with fresh mobilization to unify the party even more ahead of the elections.
